Francisco Javier Zapata Arias, Ph.D.
Qualified in Biology from the University of San Marcos, Lima, Peru in 1968. Following this he completed an M.A. in Botany at the University of Kansas, USA in 1971, and a Ph.D. in Botany at the University of Nottingham, UK in 1978.
>From 1980-1993 he worked as a Plant Physiologist and later as a Tissue Culture Specialist at theInternational Rice Research Institute, Philippines. There he did research in rice improvement using non-conventional methods.
In 1994 he was appointed a Head of the Plant Breeding Unit at the FAO/IAEA
Agriculture and Biotechnology Laboratory of the Agency's Laboratories,
Seibersdorf, Austria.
